Ne w formulation 1: The stages of anorexia nervosa – a more complex tube map

This is an elaborated version of the original simple ‘tube map' we had suggested to the workshop participants. Many participants suggested different types of routes that could be taken by people as they go through the journey of anorexia nervosa – entering at more than one possible point, going round and round in a single stage, hopping right from the start to the exit if they are caught early, getting stuck, or exiting without quite getting to be free of anorexia nervosa.

New formulation 2: The stages of anorexia nervosa – a visual map

This formulation is the synthesis of several different pictures and ideas that were generated during the workshop. It shows the progression between stages (which are depicted as ovals or circles) which may overlap with or be adjacent to each other. The arrows show the direction of possible progress and the direction of up in the diagram is associated with feeling better and direction of down in the diagram is associated with feeling worse. ‘Getting stuck' is a big heavy weight both holding someone down in mood and also holding them back from progressing forward and upward towards recovery.

Rounded Rectangular Callout: Rapid downhill slide as anorexia nervosa takes hold,Rounded Rectangular Callout: Getting stuck is like a big weight holding back and weighing down,Rounded Rectangular Callout: Uphill slog but generally getting and feeling better,Rounded Rectangular Callout: If caught early, might be able to jump straight to recovery stages,Rounded Rectangular Callout: Can get into a cycle
